Brazosport ISD congratulates students Valerie Rodriguez and Cooper Wattier for a job well done. The two eighth grade students from Lake Jackson Intermediate will be recognized at the “Do The Write Thing” Ceremony of Recognition at NRG Arena on May 19, 2019.

With over 12,000 student writings from 53 area middle schools, the “Do the Write Thing” Texas Challenge allows students to tackle a major issue facing them today: violence.  According to the DTRT committee, “they have written with confidence that they can make a difference – that they will show the way by example and by doing
the right thing.”

Following a class discussion, students are encouraged to share personal experiences about the impact of violence on their lives and the lives of their peers by responding to three questions:

How has violence affected my life?
What are the causes of youth violence?
What can I do about youth violence?

The entries are judged by a committee of business, community, and government leaders on the basis of content, originality and the most thought-provoking responsiveness. Almost unanimously, students reach the conclusion that personal responsibility, positive conduct and reaching out to others are keys to a reduction in violence.

Lake Jackson Intermediate teacher Tara Rice said, “When so much violence and negativity seem overwhelming, it is heartening to know our students know how to positively respond.”
