Each year, the Martin Luther King, Jr Celebration Committee sponsors an essay contest in honor of Dr. King.

The intent of the essay contest is to provide all students with an opportunity to learn about Dr. King, his message, and his work; to give students an opportunity to reflect on our present and the future in light of Dr. King’s purpose; and to encourage continued study through financial awards that can hopefully help students continue their lives and education with a permanent appreciation for Dr. King.

This year, students wrote about #UNITY.  The prompt stated:
“Based on the theme #UNITY, DESCRIBE UNITY AND EXPLAIN HOW YOU CAN DISPLAY UNITY IN YOUR COMMUNITY TO FURTHER DR. KING’S DREAM AND VISION.”

Lake Jackson Intermediate students placed in the essay contest for the third year in a row.  First place winner Jasmine Chashmawala earned $100 and a bluetooth speaker.  For second place, Madison Unger received $75.

“The MLKCC is an amazing group of people who give back to our community in so many ways,” said Jasmine’s teacher Tara Rice. “I feel honored to have our students participate in this essay contest each year. The essays our students wrote on #UNITY were incredibly inspirational and serve to reinforce the bright minds and caring hearts of our students.”

“Many students have heard about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. but really know very little about him,” said Madison’s teacher Paula Brown. “By researching his life, his works, and his legacy, they were able to truly comprehend the impact of his crusade for past, present, and future generations of Americans. It was a powerful project."
