Who we are:

We are a group of students led by Lynn Robertson (Construction I & II Teacher at LJI) and Dave Lee (Houston Business Owner- Life-time Backpacker- Youth Volunteer). We started this program last year because we saw a link between personnel shortage in the National Forests, State and National Parks and the need for younger students to have the opportunity to do great things for the community while learning life-long work skills/ethics. Originally, we called ourselves the Brazosport Outdoor Service Group. We knew we wanted the kids to ultimately come up with a better name. After two weekend trips, the students came up with our awesome name when they realized how dirty we had gotten after a hard day’s work. In March 2017, we were one of the grant recipients from the BISD Education Foundation and were awarded almost $5000.00 to purchase our backpacks and tools. We are also fortunate enough to have a trailer to carry all of our equipment/gear that was graciously donated by the Brazosport Rotary.

What we do:

We camp/work one weekend a month in various National Forests, State Parks and National Parks.  Students are charged $10.00 for the weekend trip. This money helps offset the cost of groceries and transportation expenses. While there, we work on whatever the facility/forest/park staff needs assistance with. Previous jobs have included building small bridges, clearing trails, diverting streams, and retrieving/repurposing bridges from previous flooded creeks. The students are taught the proper way to use the tools and jobs are given based on student capabilities.

In addition to our monthly camp-out, we also have a fundraiser one weekend a month.  We build/help customers with home projects and they donate money to our organization. Again, the students are taught the proper tool usage/safety and jobs are assigned based on capabilities.  Monies earned are used to fund our summer service trip and to offset the weekend camping fees. Examples of prior fundraiser projects include a cedar fence, 2 screened porches, landscaping, and a custom shed.

Each summer we conduct a two week extended trip focused on larger service projects.  Last summer this group traveled to the mountains and cooler weather to provide 2 weeks of service to Carson National Forest clearing trails, building bridges and providing other critically valuable service.  Monies for this trip were earned through the fundraisers aforementioned.
